2012 5A State Champion Softball Team

The Lady Deer won the 2012 5A State Championship “One pitch at a time,” triumphing over Klein Collins, 6-0, to bring home the school's first state championship in softball. Although the Lady Deer did not win district, they peaked as the play-offs began, winning bi-district, area, and Region III-5A. Deer Park players were selected for seven of the 10 spots on the state 5A all-tournament team. Pitcher Kristin Davenport was named championship most valuable player and Houston Chronicle Girl Athlete of the Week for June 3, 2012. The Texas Sports Writers Association named Davenport its 2012 Class 5A Player of the Year and Head Coach Carrie Austgen Class 5A Coach of the Year. Leftfielder Haley Harrison set a record for the all-time highest batting average in the history of the 5A championship game [.714 and 5-for-7]. During the state semi-final game, the team set a state tournament record for the most runs scored in a single inning [10 runs in the fifth]. Three players were named First Team All-State and two players were named Third Team All-State.
